Why Psychoanalysis?
Lee Byung-Wook

Abstract
Psychoanalysis has been developed with the emotional allergy of traditional western society. The 20th century, especially, was an era of collusion and disharmony in the value system. Psychoanalysis was ostracized by the extreme left and right, and treated as paganish behavior by deep-rooted conventionalists. Freud¡¯s contribution to the extension of human knowledge was always regarded with contradictory bi-polarity. Though his theory and practice was not enforced, people were scared by the radical changes in their own value systems. We live in emotional instability and according to a confused value system. From that point of view, though psychoanalysis does not radically change us so that we are happy, as Freud said it helps only to tolerate our unhappiness, and I accept his skeptical, pessimistic view. Laymen easily lean on irresponsible hopeful messages and optimistically fantastic seductive voices, but refuse the painful psychoanalytic message. Modern man¡¯s ego oscillates like a reed between the psychic duet of confused desire and fantasy. Why do we need psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis provides a way to accept our own limitations and vulnerability, and helps us make the best of our living conditions. Therefore we are free from the psychological vicious circle and the antinomic condition in golden chains. The blind would like not to know the truth, but there are those who do want to confront their inner truth. Powerful politics can rescue the helpless and hopeless, but it is a nightmare for neurotics. Psychoanalysis helps us to free ourselves from inner pressure, and to enlarge our inner power rather than external power.
